June and Barbara: The Fast Fast sounds like a miracle cure, but Mary Jane had had diabetes for eight or ten years. Does the Fast Fast work equally well for those newly diagnosed with diabetes?
Virginia: Yes, in fact, better. I have another success story for you that proves it. I met Nick in the hospital. His doctor had hospitalized him as a newly diagnosed person with diabetes, although most endocrinologists, instead of putting patients in the hospital, refer them to diabetes educator nurses and dietitians to do their initial training and glucose control as outpatients. Nick, a good-looking though chubby Hispanic guy about thirty-five years old, is a computer programmer who leads a pretty sedentary life. He had gone to the doctor with symptoms of excess urination, excess thirst, and generally feeling awful. He suspected diabetes, because most of the people in his family over the age of sixty had the disease. He had not lost large amounts of weight during this period of illness. In fact, he was about fifty pounds overweight.
The doctor had him on 70/30 insulin (NPH and regular premixed in a vial) and wanted him to get a blood glucose testing meter. I was to teach him how to use the meter. His blood sugars were still moderately high, in the 200s. I told him that it would be useful for him to be on insulin, because otherwise in those days his health insurance would not pay for a meter. But I promised him that we could get him off insulin pronto, whenever he was ready. He looked at me as if I were crazy. I think the doctor must have told him I was crazy, because we didnât see him again for a few months.
He finally decided to come to our eight-week course. He was still on insulin, but his dose was lower. He had lost about ten pounds because his wife was following the diet guidelines given to them in the hospital. When he showed up in class, he asked me about getting off insulin. I said, âSure, Nick, whenever youâre ready.â I knew it wouldnât be difficult, because he was on so little insulinâabout 16 units in the morning and 10 at night. If he really needed insulin, it would have taken a lot more than that for a guy weighing more than two hundred pounds. Besides, when youâre young and brand new to diabetes, the Fast Fast works especially well.
He started on the Fast Fast and in a few days was normoglycemic (another word for euglycemic) and off insulin.
